The element can't be found

Fix a tooltip or tour step after a release changed the page.

A tooltip or tour step points at an element through a CSS selector, such as #export-button. When your team changes the page, renaming, moving or removing that element, the selector stops matching and the guidance doesn't show.

Find what broke

Open Analytics → Issues. Broken targets lists each tooltip and tour step whose element was missing, with the selector, how many people were affected and when it last happened. Workspace admins also get a daily email when something breaks. See Broken targets.

Fix it

  1. Open the tooltip, or the tour and the step, from the list.
  2. In the step's Element (or the tooltip's CSS Selector), choose Pick element and click the element on your site with the Chrome extension. Or paste a new selector from your developer.
  3. Check it with Preview → Preview on site.
  4. Publish. People see the fixed version straight away.

Prevent it

Selectors break when they depend on details that change, such as an element's position or generated class names. Ask your developers to give the elements you point at a stable id or a data- attribute, and to keep it when they redesign. Point your guidance at that.
