Goals and experiments

Decide what success means, hold back a control group, and see whether guidance changes what people do.

Completions tell you people finished a tour. A goal tells you whether it worked: did they go on to do the thing the tour was about?

Set a goal

Open the item's Goal & experiment section (tours, tooltips and banners).

  1. Success means:
    • They do an event in your app — something your app reports, such as "report exported".
    • They visit a page — such as the billing page.
    • They complete other content — such as finishing a follow-up tour.
  2. Count it within — how many days after seeing the item still count (1 to 30).

Goal completions show on Analytics for every item with a goal.

Add a control group

Holdout keeps a share of the people who match (up to 50%) from seeing the item. Cueston compares the goal among people who saw it with the control group who didn't.

The item's analytics page then shows Goal conversion by group: the rate for each group, the difference, and whether it's statistically significant (at 95% confidence). Until enough people have been through it, the card tells you how many more it needs.

Holdouts hide the item from some people

People in the control group don't see the item at all. Use a holdout to learn, then set it back to 0 when you're convinced.

The same section sets the item's Priority. See When and how often.
