Tooltips

Explain one control right where people use it

A tooltip explains one thing on one page: a new button, a field people get wrong, a setting worth knowing. It waits next to its element instead of interrupting.

What you get

  • Four ways to open

A pulsing beacon people click, on hover, automatically, or only when someone struggles with the element.

  • Help when someone is stuck

The struggle trigger stays hidden until someone clicks a disabled button, clicks again and again with no result, or hits an error right after a click.

  • Out of the way

Tooltips don't count toward your workspace's interruption limits, so they can sit alongside a tour or banner.

How it works

From an idea to live guidance, without waiting on a release.

  1. Pick the element

Set the URL pattern and choose Pick element in the Chrome extension, or paste a stable selector like an id or data- attribute.

  2. Write it

A short title, a one- or two-sentence message and button text.

  3. Choose how it opens and closes

Pick a trigger (click, hover, auto or struggle) and a dismiss type (button, click outside or manual).

  4. Target, preview, publish

Set the audience and frequency, preview it on your site and publish.

What's included

Frequency
Show it once, daily, weekly or a custom number of times, a number of days apart.
Targeting
Show it only to people with a given role, plan or behavior. See Who sees it.
Built-in limits for struggle tips
Unasked help is rationed: at most one tip a visit, two a day and five a week per person. Closing a tip with × keeps it away for longer each time.
Measure if it helps
Add a control group in Goal & experiment. Stuck points compares how often each group got unstuck.
Translations
Write the tooltip in other languages, or start from machine translations. See Languages.
Missing element alerts
If the element disappears after a release, the tooltip stops showing and appears under Analytics, Issues.

Questions

A tour walks through several steps in order. A tooltip explains one element on one page and waits there until someone needs it.
