Tours

Ordered steps that walk someone through one workflow, each pointing at an element on the page.

A tour is a list of steps. Each step has a title, some content and, usually, the element it points at. A step without an element shows centered on the page, which works well as an introduction.

Three to seven steps that walk through one workflow work best. A tour that explains everything gets skipped.

Build one

  1. Set the URL pattern: the page the tour starts on. See URL patterns.
  2. Add steps. For each, give a CSS selector (or pick the element with the Chrome extension), a title and the content. Placement is auto, top, bottom, left or right.
  3. Choose the audience, frequency and an optional schedule. See Concepts.
  4. Preview on site, then publish.

Start a tour yourself

Tours start on their own for people who match. To start one from your own button, call:

JavaScript
Cueston.start(42); // the tour's id

Measure it

Analytics show how many people started the tour, how far they got (per step) and how many finished, skipped or closed it. If a step's element goes missing after a release, Cueston records it so you can repoint the step.

Automate it

  • REST API: /api/tours (list, create, update, publish…). See the API reference.
  • AI agents: create_tour and update_tour. See MCP tools.
